The problem

India, one of the fastest-growing economies globally, faces significant challenges with inequality, as the richest 1% hold more wealth than the bottom 90%. Approximately 83 million people still live in extreme poverty. The government allocates around USD 400b annually towards social policies and welfare programs to address these issues. However, a significant portion of these funds faces hurdles in achieving full impact due to understaffing of public officers, and challenges in implementation and public system capacity. Even a small boost in how efficiently this money is spend it could unlock as much funding as all of India’s philanthropy combined.

The solution

The foundation identifies transformative social policies and collaborates with lawmakers to activate them start to finish. Their embedded teams work with the government to refine policies, design systems, and leverage technology for effective governance and implementation on the ground. Through strategic partnerships with government champions and the media, they ensure accountability and sustainable policy success on the ground. They engage deeply with communities to maximize policy impact and gather their feedback to continuously improve policy design and implementation.

The insight

Currently active in four states and covering one-third of India’s population, RightWalk’s “5-5-50-50" strategy aims to expand its reach to cover half of India’s population. By driving five key policies, they plan to transform 50 million lives and unlock $50 billion in public funds over the next five years. With $200 million already unlocked and almost 1 million young people impacted, they are achieving 100X leverage – unlocking $100 of public funds from every $1 raised from philanthropy.
