The problem
Every 40 seconds, someone takes their life. Suicide is the leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds in India. It’s estimated that one in four Indians suffer from common mental health disorders like depression and stress. Despite this, access to care is severely limited, and 85 per cent of affected individuals do not seek professional help due to stigma, unavailability, unaffordability, and lack of awareness. India has only one psychologist per million inhabitants compared to 300 in the US, with only 1.3 per cent of the government health budget allocated to mental health
The solution
Wysa unlocks access to high-quality mental health care for millions through an AI-powered conversational chatbot that creates a safe zero-stigma space with real world outcomes on therapeutic efficacy. The empathetic chatbot engages users in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques, creating an anonymous, clinically-safe, and 24/7 available space to work through stress and difficult emotions, especially preventing them from escalating in severity and towards illness. Wysa's AI is clinically proven to create a therapeutic alliance at par with human therapists within the first week. Access to the chatbot is free, with a few additional features offered at a small fee. The platform provides a self-care library with 150+ resources, exercises created by CBT therapists, and human support with an in-house team of therapists and coaches. The Wysa app also has best practices in SOS management, whereby the chatbot recognises, based on user input, serious issues such as suicide ideation. In these cases, it escalates users to the local public emergency number or directly to a professional. It recently launched Wysa in Hindi - a first of its kind AI-solution for mental health in low resource economies – and is a step towards reducing accessibility barriers for the unserved.
