The problem
India has over 236 million primary and secondary students. The 2022 Annual State of Education Results indicates that overall learning outcomes are poor – notably in terms of arithmetic and basic reading abilities. Classroom engagement is not included in teachers’ curricula and is omitted in administrative monitoring. Market research has further shown that improved student engagement leads to improved learning outcomes.
The solution
Peepul works with public authorities to develop teacher education policies that will enable capacity building for teachers to improve student engagement. They develop education policies at the state level, train academic mentors at the district level and provide digital and in-classroom support to teachers at sub-district level.
They offer training to teachers through a state-owned teacher education app in groups of 30, then mentor them in person every quarter until the material has been adopted by the teachers.
The insight
Until March 2024, Peepul has supported 435,000 teachers and 4,000 academic mentors cumulatively, indirectly benefiting an estimated 12 million students. There have been significant improvements in engagement and academic performance, with an increase of 35% in language scores and 16% in maths scores for grade 5 students.
Peepul plans to expand into a fourth state in 2025 and is pursuing government adoption in the long term, whereby they’ll hand interventions over to the government to implement independently after 5 years.
